I have a confession to make: I secretly enjoy cuddling with cats that are not my own. Fortunately for me, however, cheating on my cats is not only legal, it is very easy for me to do now that there is a cat cafe in town. KitTea, one part tea house, one part adoptable cat lounge, officially opened in San Francisco back in June. Since then, the cafe has successfully found homes for over 76 cats, and it has now become one of my all-time favorite places to visit.
Recently, a couple of my cat-loving friends and I set out to investigate KitTea for the first time. We started our morning off with some brunch before we made our way over to the cafe. Upon entering the cafe, we were greeted by a bright, clean and modern interior, the scent of tea wafting through the air, and a giant mural of a meditating Sphynx. I was immediately smitten.
Since we arrived well before our reservation time, we made ourselves comfortable in the main cafe, which overlooks the lounge, and enjoyed a pot of tea as we scoped out all the felines we would soon get to meet. Had we not just eaten right before, we would have been sampling all the cat-shaped cookies they had on display. Once it was our turn to enter the lounge, we slipped off our shoes and carried the rest of our tea in with us.
The lounge, like the cafe, was bright and clean, with lots of cushions and seats to help you get comfortable while socializing with the cats. Some guests sat down to enjoy their tea in the company of cats; my friends and I spent our time seeking out and playing with as many cats as possible. While resident cats Duke and Stanford were busy charming my friends, I was fawning over a sleepy fluff of a cat named Lin Lin. I spent a good portion of my time cuddling her on my lap (please, don’t tell my cats).
We were having such a good time, our hour was up before we knew it. We sadly said goodbye to the cats, and immediately started planning our next trip back (and our next opportunity to adopt a cat!).
Fun fact: KitTea is now home to two Siamese Social Club coiled rope beds! If you happen walk by or visit the lounge, keep an eye out for sleepy cats snoozing in our beds!
